This article explains the different file export formats available in BLAZE and helps you select the right format for your use case.
.blzm Proprietary Format
The .blzm format is BLAZE's native proprietary file format.
The benefits of this format are:
- Playback available only in the BLAZE VMS Client (Windows and Mac).
- Digital signature support to verify export authenticity.
- Password protection available.
- Fisheye camera de-warping during playback.
- Primary and secondary streams stored in a single file.
- Multiple cameras from a layout can be exported into one file.
This format is best for internal archival, offline backups, and off-site storage where data verification and security are critical.
.exe – Self-Contained Player
The .exe format includes all features of .blzm with an embedded standalone player.
The benefits of this format are:
- All .blzm features and benefits are included.
- Built-in player launches on Windows.
- BLAZE Client installation not required for recipients.
This format is best for sharing exports with recipients who cannot install the BLAZE Client but require the security and verification features of .blzm format.
.mkv – Open Format for Archival
MKV is an open-source file format readable on any computer with standard media software.
The benefits of this format are:
- Suitable for long-term preservation.
- Forensic analysis support.
- Law enforcement approved.
- Camera timestamp embedded as subtitle track (toggleable on/off as needed).
IMPORTANT: Primary and secondary streams export as separate files. If your system is configured to record primary stream on detection and secondary stream on no
detection, ensure both boxes are checked under the Streams tab.
This format is best for long-term preservation, forensic investigations, and law enforcement applications.
.mp4 – Standard Distribution Format
MP4 is a widely-supported open format.
This format has limitations, such as:
- Timestamp data not preserved.
- Variable frame rate not properly replicated.
- Primary and secondary streams export as separate files.
This format is best for distribution on platforms requiring common media formats, such as social media.
