Summary
Incorrect cleaning can scratch a camera dome cover or view window and damage hydrophobic, anti-reflective, or scratch-resistant coatings. This article provides guidelines for safely cleaning camera dome covers and view windows.
Many transparent covers are polycarbonate or acrylic. Abrasive dust can scratch these surfaces if they are wiped dry.
Prerequisites
Before choosing a cleaner, confirm the window material and coating, and follow the camera model’s instructions.
For polycarbonate or acrylic dome covers: Use neutral soap and warm water. If soap and water are insufficient, use an optical-grade plastic cleaner such as Novus #1 or Brillianize. Do not use alcohol or ammonia cleaners (including Windex, glass cleaners, and isopropyl alcohol), acetone, thinners, Rain-X, or other water-repellent treatments.
For glass or thermal windows: Use 99% isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated optical glass lens cleaner. Avoid abrasive polish and strong acids or alkalis.
Cleaning a Dome Cover or View Window
To clean a dome cover or view window:
- Use a bulb blower or dry compressed air to remove loose debris.
Do not dry wipe a dusty dome cover or view window.
- (If available outdoors) Flush the bubble or window with clean, low-pressure lukewarm water to lift remaining particles without rubbing them into the surface.
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap or neutral, non-abrasive detergent in warm water.
- Dampen a clean, high-quality microfiber or lens cloth and gently wipe with broad, light strokes.
Paper towels or tissues can cause micro-scratches. Do not press hard or rub in circles over trapped grit.
- Remove soap residue with a soft cloth dampened with pure or distilled water.
- Gently blot or wipe dry with a fresh, dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.
